Slavery Topic
This term both year 5 classes have been learning about slavery.

One of Year 5's school trips was a visit to Liverpool Museum to visit the slavery exhibition. When they arrived at the musuem 5B went to the education room and 5G went to see some other parts of the museum. In the educational room, the children were given a brilliant talk about slavery and it was explained to the children where it originated from, who were slaves, where did they come from and how people bought slaves, etc. The children were able to have a hands on experience on lots of resources. There was a question and answer time and the children came up with some really good questions to ask. After one hour the classes swapped over.
After lunch they all went to the slavery exhibition. The children all had very mixed feelings about what they saw. When they went back to school the children produced some fantastic work for the class displays.
Here are some photos taken from the slavery exhibition.

This is a photo of buying and selling slaves.

This is what was used as money to buy slaves.

These are called shackles they were put round the slaves ankles.

This a is a photo of a slave ship. At the top of the ship were the slave traders. The middle part of the ship is where all the slaves were kept for the journey. As you can see they were all squashed and cramped together. Many slaves did not always make the journey over the sea, some died because they did not have enough food or water. Some slaves thought if they jumped overboard they would be able to swim to safety but they did not have much strength and they drowned. At the bottom of the ship is where they kept all the barrels of rum, bales of cotton etc. for them to sell.
