Year 1 visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park

It was a very cold and snowy morning on Thursday 5th February 2009 when Classes 1W and 1BP set off on their visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is set within 500 acres of 18th century parkland. It is a centre for modern and contemporary art. It has magnificant open air sculpture displays, pioneering education and community work. There are also many activities and events to take part each week, most of these are free of charge.

When they arrived at the park it was covered with snow, the children had never seen so much snow, like a white blanket had covered everywhere.

Firstly the children were split into two groups. They were then shown round the galleries and a guide explained to them what the sculptures were. (Some of the sculptures even the adults were a bit unsure of).

At lunchtime, the children and adults had to walk through the park to where they were eating.  The children were finally in the snow they were laughing, smiling, looking at there footprints.  They decided to make their own snow sculptures and made huge snowballs for a snowball fight.  The children had an amazing time.  They finally had their lunch in a big building in the middle of the park.

After lunch Mr Williams disappeared for 5mins and when he returned he said they were going on a secret path walk.  They all set off down this little winding path, there were trees and their branches above their heads were heavy with snow.  The children explained it was like they were in a scene from the Chronicles of Narnia.  As they were following the path, they saw lots of sculptures of all different shapes and sizes.

Unfortunately the time had come for the children and adults to make their way back to the coach. It was a fantastic day out for all children and staff especially because they had never seen so much SNOW in one place.

Year 1 visit local churches

Year 1 have been studying about Christianity and they went to visit two local churches to have a look at the buildings and see what is inside them.

Their first visit was to St Crispins church, which is pictured above.  Mrs Bradshaw told the children about what happens in a church and answered the childrens' questions. They were then allowed to have a look around the church to see the statues, altar, organ and the Bible and hymn books that are used.

Their next visit was to St Kentigerns Roman Catholic church, where they met Father Tom Connolley.

The church is pictured below and the children were able to ask Father Tom about his church and see the different things in this church to their own place of worship.

Below are two photographs from St Kentigerns.

These visits not only helped the children understand about Christianity, but they were able to see the differences in these places of worship to their own.
