Attendance at Wilbraham

Attendance at Wilbraham is one of our key priorities. If children do not attend school, they are disadvantaged in that they do not make as much progress as they should and miss out on the friendship and support of their classmates. There are laws concerning school attendance which we must follow.  Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure that their children attend school, unless there is a reasonable reason not to do so, such as genuine illness.

In the event of absence, please ensure that you let the school know by phoning on the first day of absence.  We do have an answer phone so messages can be left at any time.  Please see the main Attendance page for ways in which you can inform us of absences.

Notification of absence is extremely important as it ensures that we keep children's records accurate at all times and we ask that you comply with this request at all times.

If your child is absent and we have not received an explanation, we will attempt to contact you.  If we do not receive a reason for an absence then the absence will be recorded as 'unauthorised'.

A child's annual attendance and record of punctuality are recorded on their school report that is given out at the end of the year.  Any parent wishing to discuss their child's attendance are asked to make an appointment at the school office with our Attendance Leader.

Why is regular school attendance important?

  • It establishes positive patterms for future learning in life and work
  • Builds self confidence and self esteem
  • Allows your child to make good friendships and flourish socially
  • Promotes a happy positive attitude to school
  • Helps your child to feel part of the school community, to feel valued and develop their skills, interests and abilities to the full

Procedures for dealing with concerns

It is the school's responsibility to monitor attendance and punctuality.  If there are concerns with a child's absence rate then school will contact parents/carers to discuss their child's attendance, this may be over the phone or the parent may be invited to attend a meeting in school.  If a child's attendance continues to cause concern for school then there are legal consequences that may affect the parent/carer.
